This was a wonderful list. It made me remember. When my husband was deployed to Iraq, we were not able to talk on the phone daily. We also did not have the benefit of skype or webcam. I would still say that communication is such an essential part of maintaining a healthy relationship when your spouse is deployed. I think your #1 is so important. Have a plan and remember that you have to be flexible. Deployement situations require flexibility. Remember not to panick when you don't hear from your spouse when you are "supposed to". Other things that worked well for us- Communicating prayer needs to each other and praying for each other regularly. Both spouses need prayer and benefit from knowing the other one is praying. Sending pictures as much as possible. This included the deplopyed spouse sending pictures of his living area. This helped me feel closer to him and where he was.
I'm sure I could list other things but this is all the time I have. I enjoyed your list and thank you for taking the time to write it. I am sure you are helping many people.

My WFMW post: <a href="http://gravityofmotion.blogspot.com/2009/09/works-for-me-wednesday-organizing.html" rel="nofollow"> Organizing School Papers </a>

What a great benefit our current technology provides to families that are separated!

Just a few months ago I was out to coffee with a friend whose husband was in Iraq. During our time together he text messaged her. I found myself amazed that they could be so far away and yet in instant communication like that.

What great tips you have given here!

Such great advice from one who knows well what deployments are like. Also really, being open about expectations and making communication important is excellent advice for all marriages!

Great suggestions... Communication is key and with web cams ...life is better...

I also think "Care Packages" mean more than most people give them credit... not only does it give them hard to get items but also som luxuries from home.... where I worked we had several employees in the reserves and deployed.... we sent care packages periodically.... I can't tell you how many times we were thanked when they got back... it was nice to make a difference.

I also was a kindergarten Sunday School teacher... we had the kids make pictures and send them also... we received names of military that had no family or weren't getting anything from family... we kind of adopted them....

That is great advice. I'm not a military wife, but there are plenty that will benefit. Thanks for sharing!
