This dump cake recipe is one of our family favorites.
I like to keep these ingredients on hand because when we have unexpected company, this recipe is super simple to throw together and it’s always a hit with anyone who has tried it. It makes about 12 servings, too, so it’s great for a crowd.
The ingredients are literally dumped into a casserole dish, thus the name. There is no mixing or sifting or separating or whipping, which makes it a great recipe for kids to do on their own, or with a minimal help from an adult.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Ingredients:
* 1 (20 ounces) can crushed pineapple, undrained
* 1 (21 ounces) can prepared more fruit cherry pie filling
* 1 (18.25 ounces) box yellow cake mix
* 2 sticks of butter or margarine, each cut into 12 slices
* 1/4 cup chopped nuts (your choice – optional)
Preparation:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (325 for glass baking dish). Have a 9 by 13-inch baking pan ready.
- Dump undrained pineapple baking dish or pan and spread it out evenly.
- Using a spoon, dump globs of cherry pie filling evenly on top of the pineapple.
- Sprinkle the cake mix evenly over the cherry and pineapple layers.
- Cut butter into slices with a butter knife and place slices evenly over cake mix.
- Sprinkle nuts on top if you’re using them.
- Bake for one hour. Use heavy oven mitts to remove the dump cake from oven or let your older helper do it.
We have also made this with 2 cans of sliced peaches, instead of the cherry and pineapple. It comes out a lot like peach cobbler and is absolutely delicious served warm with vanilla ice cream!

I had some friends who used to make Dump Cake for every special occasion. MMMM – I’d forgotten how good that was. Thank you so much for the reminder!

I love this recipe. Have you tried it with the berry pie fillings? Like the peach it’s a lot like the berry cobbler of whatever berry you use; blackberry, blueberry, strawberry. A very versatile recipe. And yummy!

Yum! I’ll have to try this soon. My 3 and 2 year old are so into helping and this sounds like one we’d all enjoy.
