It seems that I’m ready to admit to the world that we are a family of true rednecks.
First I told you about how I’m a closet wrestling fan.
Now, I’m outing my husband. He is the NASCAR fan in this family.
He’s been a fan of the racing sport for a long time, but hasn’t been able to enjoy it for the past few years since we lived in Germany and he did two tours in Iraq.
He has been enjoying watching the race on Sunday afternoons after work and keeping up with his favorite drivers.
A few weeks ago, while purchasing my weekly groceries, the cashier asked me if I was a NASCAR fan.
I thought this to be an odd question to ask out of the blue. I responded that I wasn’t, but my husband was.
She then told me that he’ll be happy.
“Why?†I asked.
“Because you just won two tickets to see the Goody’s 500 at Martinsville Race Track.â€
I couldn’t wait to get home to share the news with Keith.
I don’t think he actually believed me until I called the number on our grocery receipt and the tickets were in our hand.
We made arrangements for his parents to come up and visit and on Sunday we went to our first NASCAR race.
Rain was in the day’s forecast, but we remained hopeful that the race would continue.
Before the race began we enjoyed walking around to all of the booths, browsing the merchandise, and people watching. People watching happens to be one of my favorite things to do.
We got a “famous†Martinsville hot dog and drinks before returning to our seats to {hopefully} enjoy the race.
We had incredible seats. The location was perfect to see the entire race track.
That is if we were going to see anything at all. The sky was so cloudy that we could barely see the blimp flying above us and could not see the jet that did a “low†fly over.
After the opening ceremonial activities, it was announced that they were going to try to begin the race after the track was dried off.
For an hour we watched trucks with blowers on them make rounds around the race track in an effort to dry the surface.
And as soon as it was dry, it began to rain again.
And this time, it didn’t look like the rain was going to let up.
We decided that our first NASCAR race wasn’t going to happen at the same time as it was being announced that the race was being called for the day and postponed for Monday.
Even though we left a little disappointed and a lot wet, we enjoyed our day together.
I have found that it is important to marriage to encourage and learn about your husband’s hobbies.
Keith and I share some hobbies and there are other hobbies of his that even though I don’t share a full interest in it, I try my best to encourage his interest. The biggest way I do this is listen to him talk about them and give him opportunities to enjoy them.
Are there hobbies that you share with your husband?
In what ways to you encourage your spouse’s hobbies?

AAWW That is so sad! We are race fans. Actually my Mom raced cars for years and that’s how I got involved with racing. So maybe we are bigger rednecks lol. I did watch the race on Monday but it just wasn’t the same as when everyone is here and together. It has become good family time for us. I just hope the next time you guys get some time together it won’t get rained out 🙁 At least you won the tickets so it didn’t hurt the pocket book too bad 🙂

What a fantastic date!!! I went to a race when I was in grad school in Michigan – I never understood how people could get SO into a bunch of cars driving around a racetrack… but having been to one – I get it!! 🙂
ps. You look beautiful with that baby bump!!

Sorry that the rain messed up the actual race. That stinks! I’m sure though that both of you enjoyed your “alone time”! We don’t care if our dates are to do the grocery shopping – it’s nice to be just a couple for awhile.

It’s awesome that you were able to get free tickets. I’ve only been to one race as a little girl. After sitting there for some time watching them go around the track about 100 times, I finally asked my step-father, “When is someone going to crash!”
You are brave to sit in bleachers while expecting and am glad that you still had a good time!
It’s great to be back blog reading and writing!
Have a blessed Easter.

Sorry y’all didn’t get to enjoy the race! I guess you weren’t able to come back the next day, then. My husband and I both love Nascar. He also loves any other kind of racing, lol!

Hi! I couldn’t wait to share this story with my husband! He said that he is surprised that you didn’t see us waving to you as we sat nice and dry in front of our TV set watching. 🙂 My husband has enjoyed NASCAR and we have got to Bristol, Martinsville, Charlotte, Rockingham, Atlanta, Darlington, and Poconos. Since I am not a fan, my poor hubby would roll his eyes when I pulled out a harlequin romance or started to grade papers during the race. When they went up on the prices for tickets, and hotel prices, we have decided to just watch it on TV. Glad you had fun even though you didn’t see the race.

Bummer that you didn’t get to enjoy the race, but I am so very happy that you enjoyed the day together. I would love to go to a NASCAR race one of these days. I had an opportunity to drive a race car a long time ago and it was incredible! I hope I can return the favor to my husband one of these days. The girls still talk about driving race cars, although they were weaned on F1 in France. Seems our family has a need for speed. 🙂

Oh no!!! I’m sorry that you didn’t get to see the race…but I’m glad you had a nice day together! 🙂
My husband has recently taken more of an interest in my passion, the arts! He and I are hoping to attend a performance, or go to an art museum this spring! {It’s about an hour drive to do either…so the fact that he wants to do that with me is a big deal! 🙂 }

That is awesome that you won tickets. I am not a NASCAR fan, but I can imagine that Keith had to be so excited.
My husband loves MMA. That is mixed martial arts, but most people just know it as UFC. We watch it all of the time. I am pretty into too. Sometimes we buy the pay per views, sometimes we go to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch them, and we have even been to a few fights in person. It is neat that we share this interest, but definitely at different levels. He is WAY into it. 😛

I agree… it is so important to share an interest in our spouse’s interest. For my husband it is sailing. He loves to sail. So on Wednesday nights from April-Sept the kids and I go downtown and cheer Daddy on as he races on his friends boat. While I don’t care much for sailing myself, def not racing, I do love cheering him on and supporting his passion in this way.
Sorry you missed the race, but so glad you enjoyed the day together!

You made me laugh out loud about outing your husband. I would have never thought! Sorry it didn’t exactly happen, but I’m sure it won’t be your last race you get to enjoy together!

That stinks! Sorry! My dad LOVES NASCAR!! I don’t care to watch it on TV, but I’ve always wanted to go to a race. At least you made the best of it. I’d probably have pouted and complained all day! Cute lil’ belly you have peeking out there! 😉
