I just updated my outdated version of WordPress for this blog!
I did it all on my own, too. Well…with the help of the WordPress Blog Automatic Update Plugin.
I have had these annoying messages on the dashboard of my blog that just glared at me everytime I went into my site administration. The messages simply stated that there was a newer version and I needed to update.
That’s all fine and good, but I was completely scared out of my wits to do anything that might break the blog. Especially with Keith in another country, unable to fix any possible mess that I would create.
That was until I got a little extra motivation. After doing some tweeking to my blog header this weekend (how do you like it???) I decided that I would really like to switch to the Thesis theme because it allows for much, much more customization. I got the go-ahead from Keith to do that this afternoon, but I really wanted to take care of this upgrading business first.
So, I went looking through google to see if I could figure out how to do the upgrade myself. I happened upon a blog explaining how to use the Automatic Update Plugin and I also read some other rave reviews of it.
From the wordpress site:
WordPress Automatic Upgrade allows a user to automatically upgrade the wordpress installation to the latest one provided by wordpress.org using the 5 steps provided in the wordpress upgrade instructions.
WordPress automatic upgrade upgrades your wordpress installation by doing the following steps.
- Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
- Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
- Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
- Puts the site in maintenance mode.
- De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
- Upgrades wordpress files.
- Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
- Re-activates the plugins.
So, after getting EA, MC, and Will to bed tonight, I sat down at the computer, said a prayer, and began the process of installing the plugin and running the automatic update.
And IT WAS SO UNBELIEVEABLY E-A-S-Y!
I kid you not, I was done in less than 30 minutes!!
So, if you use wordpress for your blog and you’ve been putting off your updates, I highly recommend that you take a look at the Automatic Upgrade Plugin.
And be on the lookout for more changes coming here in the new future as I make the move to a new, fully customizeable blog theme!

It looks amazing!! You have inspired me. I’m on Blogger and really want a fuller page to go across the width of the screen. Hmm, might have to play with it and see. Today, though, I’m headed outside with the snifferdoodles and enjoying the sunshine!! It’s so wonderful of God to have it come out to play today after DAYS of fog!

You go! You did a great job, and I can’t wait to see what else you do. Doesn’t it amaze what you can do once you work up the confidence? (Please feel free to remind me that I wrote that the next few times that I am wallowing in my lack of confidence) 🙂
