WFMW – Kitchen Bubbles

by Monica on May 27, 2009

wfmwbannerkristenSome moms are great at multi-tasking in the kitchen. They can handle three children plus dinner preparations and clean-up without batting an eye.

I’m not one of them.

I need to be able to focus when I work in the kitchen.

I have to follow a recipe for most things that I cook…I’m very type-A that way.

And that means distractions need to be kept at a minimum.

But my little Will….he loves to be in on the action…any action, especially cooking and cleaning and being with mommy in the kitchen.

I have found that the perfect way to keep him entertained while I slave work away in the kitchen is to run a sink of bubbles with dish detergent and pull up a stool for him to stand at the sink and play.

It’s much like having a water table right in the kitchen. But I would never actually be brave enough to buy a real water table for inside the house.

That look of joy on his face and the time it gives me to focus on the kitchen task at hand definitely Works for Me!

I can totally relate to you on this! Especially if I am working on a new recipe, or counting out 10 cups of flour or something. If I am distracted I forget how much I already put in or something. While I love the idea of having my children chattering about me, I have a hard time cooking. I can’t say I have found a solution except to plan teaching times for cooking and to train them that when mommy is counting flour, don’t interrupt ;) Love the bubbles in the sink idea…will have to try that on my youngest!

That is so sweet and what a great idea. I bet the memory of playing in the sink will be one that sticks with him.

My mom taught me this trick! Works like a charm!

Also good: letting him play with (toy) pots and pans while I cook (as long as he doesn’t insist on using the stove), letting him watch and letting him help with easy things like dumping ingredients into a mixing bowl.

Also, since he loves bubbles so much, we sometimes have him help with the dishes. He actually does pretty good at scrubbing.

Great post and yes–it keeps them very happy. As if I could keep Little Man off the counter if I wanted! :) Nice blog!

I would LOVE to be one of those women who can do 10 things at once AND cook a meal. So not me!! I am glad that you have something that works to get you a little time to focus on the task.

This is a super great idea… I am def keeping this one in mind. The tricky part for me would be letting only one in the bubbles at a time. B/C if they were all 3 in the bubbles, then I would have chaos on my hands.
