While on the Treadmill

by Monica on March 18, 2009

wfmwbannerkristenI have recently become much more consistent with my exercise program. Big thanks to my husband for motivating and encouraging me during his R&R leave. My plan is basically to walk/run (mostly walk at the moment) 2 miles on the treadmill. It usually takes about 35 minutes. I also hope to make it to the gym at least once a week for a work out of the elliptical machine. You can follow my progress at DailyMile.

One thing that I have found is that I bore easily while on the treadmill. It has been a work in progress to find just the right thing to listen to. Music does not do it for me.

I have found that I need my mind to be engaged during this time so that I am not absolutely bored out of my mind! Because if I am bored during my workout it is so much more painful!!!

So, I have started listening to various poscasts and audiobooks. I sometimes end with some worship music. A sermon is usually just the right amount of time and works great, too.

Here is a list of what I am currently listening to:

I agree with you. I can walk on the treadmill MUCH longer if I am listening to music. Especilly oldies. I just walk to the beat of the music and the time goes by much faster. Without something to listen to, the time just drags by. Your listening list sounds wonderful!

Sometimes I will read a book or magazine while I’m on the treadmill. That helps me pass the time and get in my reading time.

great idea! I’m glad you didn’t suggest reading, because I walk off the side of the treadmill if I try that!

Time to pull out the mp3 player and start downloading! Thanks!

Tee-hee. I did read on the treadmill for months, actually–but only while I was walking. Once I started putting in more running, it was hard to keep it up. Podcasts are wonderful, and it’s funny–we have very similar tastes!

Congrats on your consistency and stick-to-it-iveness. It’s a tough thing to find time both to exercise and educate our minds, and this way you’re doing both–smart girl!

Thanks for the tip! I’ve always been big on videotaping (yes, so 1990′s) TV shows and watching them while I walk/run. BUT, I have given up reality TV this year (woo-hoo!) and once the DTV conversion finally goes through, I don’t think I’ll be able to tape ANYTHING. So, your idea to download podcasts is something I will have to delve into. And the enriching options are so much better than TV, anyway!

That is a fantastic idea! I find the same thing happens for me on my treadmill. Somedays are better than others, but I’m constantly trying to find the right mix to make it as painless as possible.

I hear ya about the treadmill. I hate treadmill running. I dread treadmill workouts when I am traveling and don’t have a safe outdoor area for running. Great ideas, though. Really loud rock music usually gets me through.
